Periods, Fasting, and the Hypocrisy We Refuse to See

Even today, girls are told: “Don’t enter temples, don’t touch puja items, don’t pray when you are on your period.” And the worst part? Many modern, independent women proudly follow these rules as if it makes them more “respectful” or “devoted.” They don’t just follow — they pass this same garbage to their daughters, keeping the cycle of superstition alive.

At the same time, women are praised for fasting — even when they are weak, sick, or simply don’t want to. Instead of questioning, many women themselves feel proud of destroying their health in the name of devotion. This blind pride is exactly what ensures that all this bullshit survives into the next generation.

So let’s rip the mask off with two straight questions:

  1. If your God can tolerate crimes like murder, rape, corruption, and exploitation happening every single day, why can’t He tolerate a woman praying during her period? Why can’t He tolerate her breaking a fast, or not keeping it at all? What kind of fragile God gets offended by blood or food but stays silent in front of real evil?
  2. You worship goddesses — Durga, Kali, Lakshmi. So tell me: if your goddess had a human body and menstruated, would you stop worshipping her? Would you call her unworthy of puja? If not, then why do you treat actual women as unworthy when they menstruate? The hypocrisy couldn’t be clearer.

And this hypocrisy isn’t just in rituals — it runs deep into the stories people hold sacred. Look at the Ramayan. After rescuing Sita from Lanka, Ram asked her to prove her purity by walking through fire — Agni Pariksha. Why only Sita? Why not Ram? During those years apart, Ram also met many women in his journey, but no one ever questioned his purity. The burden of proof was forced only on the woman. If that’s not patriarchy, then what is?

Let’s be real: these are not divine laws. These are man-made restrictions, born out of patriarchy, control, and fear of women’s bodies. Periods are not impure. Fasting is not a badge of holiness. And women torturing themselves while calling it “devotion” is not strength — it’s conditioning.

And one more thing that no one dares to ask: why are most of these fasts and rituals only for women? Why not men? Why are women always expected to prove their faith through pain, sacrifice, and silence, while men get a free pass?

Enough with the hypocrisy. Enough with hiding behind “tradition.” Respect doesn’t mean obeying nonsense without questions. Faith doesn’t mean glorifying suffering. And devotion doesn’t mean treating women like second-class believers.

If God exists, He doesn’t care about your periods or your empty stomach. He cares about truth, compassion, and justice. The rest is just human-made bullshit passed off as religion.
